Friendly local grocer looks forward to retirement

NORTHCLIFF – Local retired manager spends his time creating furniture from old tree trunks and one of his pieces will be auctioned off by the Rotary Club Northcliff.

Local manager retired at the end of 2018 after being involved in the family business for over 45 years.

Zorba Miltiado has been the manager of the Pick n Pay Northcliff Square for 18 years and believes it’s time for the younger generation to take over the reins.

Miltiado together with his family immigrated from Cyprus in 1965, he matriculated in 1969 from Parktown Boys’ High School and went on to study mining engineering at the Universty of Witwatersrand. He has been involved in the retail business since 1973.

Zorba Miltiado completed this table from the trunk of a pepper tree and it has taken him over a year to complete. It stands at 1.70m x 0,65m high.

Miltiado spends his free time creating brilliant furniture from old tree trunks which were proudly displayed and used in the store any many residents and shoppers can attest to that. As a farewell gift, Miltiado decided to donate his latest piece of art to the Rotary Club of Northcliff of which he has been a keen supporter over many years. The table is made from the trunk of a pepper tree and has taken him over a year to complete.

The Northcliff Rotary Club is involved in many community projects both locally and nationally with the latest completed project being the redevelopment of Northcliff Ridge pathways at the water tower. The club will be auctioning this masterpiece via its website on www.northcliffrotary.co.za.

Art collectors and interior decorators can place bids – the minimum reserve price is R10 000. The funds raised will be used for the various community projects that the club is involved in.

Zobra Miltiado created the all-weather table with glow in the dark pigmentation from the trunk of a pepper tree and is auctioning it at the Northcliff Rotary Club website.

When asked what he is most looking forward to in his retirement, Miltiado said, “I am looking forward to spending more time at my second home at the Vaal with my partner Dianne as well as creating more beautiful furniture. Who knows, they may become valuable pieces of art.

“The one thing I will not miss are those early morning starts and late finishing times, but I guess it’s the norm in the retail industry,” he said jokingly and concluded, “most of all though, I will miss all you friendly shoppers and the many chats over the years.”
