Fairland CPF host their first meeting of 2019

FAIRLAND – One month down, 11 more to go.

The Fairland Community Policing Forum (CPF) held their inaugural meeting for the year 2019.

The meeting, which was attended by members of Fairland’s police station, security companies, ward councillors and residents, offered everyone in attendance a chance to hear the latest security issues facing them. One by one, various departments of the CPF took centre stage to discuss how the festive season went for the community.

Warrant Officer Koobair of Fairland Police Station jumped into the proceedings as he shared the state of crime in the area since their last meeting. He stated that during the festive season there was an increase in assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Arrests were made for a few of the cases that were reported. He also shared that business robberies were also on the rise. He mentioned that five cars were reported stolen in one evening. He said arrests have been made but he didn’t go into too much into detail as the matter was still being investigated and it was at a delicate stage. Lastly, he wanted to remind parents and motorists that now that schools are back to their usual activities, crime outside schools could increase. He told residents to be on the lookout when dropping off and fetching their children.

The victim support unit of the CPF also had a busy December as they attended to 53 victims. These were victims of contact crimes and social crimes. Head of the unit Dr Sally Röthemeyer said the unit experienced an increase ofsuicide-relatedd matters. She said, “On Christmas Eve, there was an explosion of suicide attempts.”

The rest of the month seemed to be relatively quiet. She concluded by sharing that they will begin training new recruits from February. Once successful, these recruits will add much need manpower to the unit’s duties.

The next meeting will be held on 12 February and all residents in the policing precinct are invited. It will be held at the Mosiek Church from 6.30pm. Follow the Facebook page Fairland CPF to get regular updates on safety and security-related information.
