JOBURG – Gauteng comes out on top in 2018’s matric results.

Class of 2018 achieve a matric pass rate of 78.2 percent.

With last year’s matrics anxiously waiting for the release of their results, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga shared the country’s latest National Senior Certificate matric results. The Auditorium at Vodacom World in Midrand was filled with learners, education stakeholders and role players as she announced that this year’s pass rate was 78.2 percent.

The results came as an increase as the rate in 2017 was 75.1 percent. This is an increase of 3.1 percent from the class of 2017. This rate includes progressed learners and the rate without these learners was 79.4 percent. Among these passes, 172 043 passed with a bachelor’s degree admission, 141 700 passed with admission to a diploma and 87 790 with a pass for a higher certificate.

In traditional fashion, provinces battled it out to see who came out on top this year. In 2018 Gauteng took the top spot with a pass rate of 87.9 percent. Last year’s best performing province, Free State, fell to third place as they attained a pass rate of 87.5 percent. Western Cape held onto their silver medal in the second position as they achieved a pass rate of 81.5 percent. The only province to not get a pass rate above 70 percent was Limpopo. The pass rate there was 69.4 percent, just 0.6 percent of the governments pass rate goal for every province.
