2018’s challenges and achievements for Ward 86

JOBURG – The time to rest and reflect has come upon the residents of Ward 86.

A local councillor celebrates the achievements of 2018 while taking note of certain problems that need to be better attended to in the New Year.

Ward 86 councillor Philip Kruger is happy with the progress made in his ward over the last year. The ward, which consists of areas such as Sophiatown, Albertville, Albertskroon, Greymont, parts of Newlands, parts of Northcliff, Quellerina, Bergbron and others, had a range of mentionable achievements for the year.

Kruger shared, “Our highlights for the year would include some much-needed infrastructure upgrades in Ward 86 (Gordon Road – Banfield City Power cabling upgrade), the removal of invasive species at several spots, the installation of traffic calming in dangerous spots, as well as strides made in general service delivery issues.”

As every ward would, this one experienced a few issues that worried the councillor. Kruger listed the management of open spaces, illegal dumping in parks and on street corners and the decay and ageing of infrastructure in general as a few of the ward’s lowlights for 2018. He remains optimistic that his ward and the City will be able to attend to these issues. “In 2019, the administration will continue to improve service delivery with pride, by creating a professional public service culture in all departments and entities.”

Within the ward, there were two residents that he believed deserved a special mention for their efforts towards the community. “Many residents take an active role in their communities, but two residents deserve special mention. Linda Verwey in Albertville and Albertskroon and Clive Malherbe in Greymont. They have gone above and beyond their civic duty to ensure issues get communicated and addressed effectively and timeously.”

Councillor Kruger would like to extend his sincere well wishes as residents get ready for the upcoming holiday season. “I would like to wish every resident in Ward 86 a blessed festive season. Enjoy the time with your family and friends, and be safe on the road.”
