Zoid Republic’s ‘Minister of Melville’ presents his portfolio

MELVILLE – Veteran singer and songwriter launches new album.

Jannie du Toit’s 40-year-old classic song, ‘n Liedjie vir jou, is topping the iTunes’ sales chart, after the song was performed by Du Toit and Karen Zoid, on Zoid’s television show.

During July, Karen Zoid invited the legendary Jannie du Toit from Melville to perform a duet with her on show, Republiek van Zoid-Afrika on DSTV, channel 144.

Chane Jonker, Theuns Botha, Susan Mouton and Jannie du Toit.

Their rendition of this classic hit is now featured on Du Toit’s new album, Oesjaar 2018 (Vintage 2018) which he will be launching in Melville on 1 December.

On each episode of her show, Zoid appoints a ‘minister’ to her ‘cabinet.’ In this episode, Jannie du Toit was appointed ‘Minister of Melville’.

During the show, they spoke about how, when Karen was still a young busking artist on the streets of Melville in the 90s, Du Toit made a cash donation into Zoid’s guitar box.

He was already an established singer by then, and she has never forgotten that Du Toit supported emerging artists.

The album, Oesjaar 2018 offers a wealth of new songs, such as Jy Kyk Sag which he wrote for his wife Therina.

In Koffiekafeetjie, Du Toit pays tribute to the legendary Mixer Koffiehuis in Melville, and it’s former manager Badia Isaacs. We Need a Tata is a dedication to Madiba, a leader who ‘lived with a smile.’

Following the launch concerts at Mothership Studios and the Atterbury Theatre over the past two weeks – and preceding a tour of 17 performances during the December holidays – Melville can expect a crescendo on Saturday 1 December in the Kruiskerk in Melville’s hall.

Du Toit will be joined by his ensemble, comprising Susan Mouton on cello, Chanie Jonker on piano and accordion and Theuns Botha on percussion/drums.

This concert will also feature the a cappella group Breathe with Gabisile Nkosi, Sizwe Mondlane and Sandile Mcunu who are all students from the University of Johannesburg.

Tickets are available at R120 per person from Du Toit’s Agterplaas Guest House in Melville.
