De La Salle College cyclists ride the 947 Cycle Challenge for a cause

VICTORY PARK – De La Salle College family draped in Growing Champions colours for the 947 Cycle Challenge.

28 De La Salle Holy Cross College teachers, learners and their parents entered the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge in support of Growing Champions.

Founder of Growing Champions (GC), Sam Toweel-Moore was filled with joy prior to the 22nd Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge when she was informed that De La Salle Holy Cross College had so many in support of GC.

Toweel-Moore said this act was an inspirational one and reminded the children that there are people out there who care for them.

She said, “You cannot be anything but moved to tears as 28 cyclists say, yes little one, let me be the answer to your prayer. Yes, God, I will help this child.”

She shared what it meant to her and GC for these cyclists to ride and to compete in their colours.

She said, “Letting our hurt children see they are valued and not the useless burdens they are often made to believe by repeated abuse.”

These riders were part of the NPO’s first-ever 947 Cycle Challenge Riders with a purpose.

The purpose they aimed to achieve was to collect the necessary support to house their boys and girls.

Toweel-Moore said, “The purpose is to have a house for children who are brave enough to break the shackles of poverty, violence, abuse and addiction that they were innocently born into.”

Toweel-Moore stated that this wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the efforts of Beverly van der Merwe.

She was the person who organised the 28 riders for GC.

Toweel-Moore said, “She needed to get at least 10 people who were willing to ride for a charity. She put the word out at De La Salle Holy Cross College and teachers, learners and their parents came on board.”

Growing Champions has thanked every person who was involved in the project. Toweel-Moore said, “Thank you for riding to raise funds for her to have a safe space to sleep. You are our heroes.”
