King David proves that playing outdoors can be a creative way to learn

VICTORY PARK – You can learn more by being outside of the classroom.

For the second year in a row King David Ariel celebrated Outdoor Classroom Day.

Outdoor classroom day is a worldwide campaign to promote outdoor play and learning.

More than 140 000 children in South Africa and 3,5 million children worldwide participated in the day this year, as part of a campaign to bring innovative ideas for learning and play that involve our natural environment.

King David Ariel Remedial School participated in the global event which ran from 1 November to 15 November 2018.

Outdoor Classroom Day Ambassador Lauren Creamer shared how the school got involved in this year’s celebrations.

She said, “Building on the schedule from our first outdoor learning day in May, each class got to attend sessions that were planned around the therapy disciplines here at Ariel as well as some core learning and creative skills.”

With activities such as a mini Olympics session and tug of war, the learners got to experience new ways to learn speech, language, word meanings and teamwork.

Creamer added, “The classes also had Hebrew, art and science lessons outside, sketching different parts of the school and exploring the water cycle.

We ended the day with a water session under the trees, including a slip and slide, sprinklers, fozzie foam and ice bites.”

The event was a truly wonderful one as the children had fun and enjoyed the variety of activities and the novelty of learning outdoors.

This motivated the school to believe that they had achieved the goal of the campaign.
