Linden Bowling Club to host breakfast, braai and potjiekos at Fun Day

LINDEN – It will be a day to remember, when Linden Bowling Club starts cooking on 17 December.

Food, fun, and games will be the order of the day when Linden Bowling Club hosts its annual Fun Day.

The event on 17 December will feature a breakfast, braai and potjiekos as well as fun bowling, a plant sale, and jumping castles for children.

The event is the cherry on top of the cake of fun for the club after members went skydiving and spent a weekend away earlier this year.

Chairperson of the organising committee, Elaine Wilson said the Fun Day acted as a fundraiser and introduction of the club to the community.

“Breakfast starts at 8.30am and bowls kicks off at 9am,” she said. “If you have never bowled I would encourage you to try it out.”

“We are still deciding if there will be a bowls competition but we will have spot prizes for the best new bowler, for example.”

The Fun Day also caps off a good year for Linden, after it won the Johannesburg Bowls Association (JBA)Trips Tournament for the second year in a row.

The club’s two international bowlers, Esmé Hailey and Tracy-Lee Botha were instrumental in this, and Haley also won the JBA Singles Tournament this year.

The club is always competitive in the JBA leagues which recently started again.

“If anyone is interested I would encourage them to join our club because we are a fun club and our ladies are strong in tournaments.”

Wilson said bowling was a relatively inexpensive sport to play, was highly social and developed fitness without much strenuous exercise.

Mary-Anne Nieuwoudt practises at Linden Bowling Club shortly before her team won the Johannesburg Bowls Association Trips Tournament.

While easy to play, bowls was not easy to master, and promoted focus and concentration which could help in other activities, she added.

The Fun Day has an entry fee of R30 for adults and R20 for children.

After that, breakfast rolls are R25, boerewors rolls are R35, hotdogs are R25 and a potjie meal is R50.
