Ward Councillor David Hensman in the process of reducing speeding on John Adamson Drive

Ward councillor has noted residents’ concerns regarding reckless driving on John Adamson Drive.

Various residents across Roosevelt Park and Montgomery Park have been calling on the City of Johannesburg to do something about the reckless and negligent driving on John Adamson Drive. The area’s ward councillor, David Hensman, has also been contacted about the issue and says he has noted the issues and is attending to the matter.

“I have received complaints from residents about dangerous drivers, more specifically excessive speeding. I have contacted the Metro police to set up a few speed cameras in the area to reduce the incidents of speeding,” he said, adding that most of the reckless drivers on the road are drivers’ attempts to avoid traffic on Beyers Naudé Drive.

Hensman also responded to the calls for more traffic-calming measures to be put in place, within the area. Measures such as speed humps, traffic circles and others are well-known for reducing speed on secondary roads.

He said, “Getting the City to install these traffic-calming measures will be difficult to achieve as there are various requirements and restrictions. Having these measures on John Adamson Drive and the secondary roads coming from it will negatively impact response time of emergency services and the police. They can also result in more traffic in the area.”

Due to this, he has pleaded with residents to understand that the Johannesburg Roads Agency will first have to investigate the possibility of creating these traffic-calming measures, which can take an extended period of time.

In the meanwhile, he has been in contact with the Metro police to set up speed cameras and police officers on the secondary roads of John Adamson Drive. He also said the core of this problem is that South Africa is full of drivers with a reckless mentally. He believes the best way to solve this issue is to change the way in which people drive.
