Emmarentia Residents Association clean-up project hailed as a success

EMMARENTIA – A team of almost 100 people dug up or poisoned invasive alien plants, cleared a clogged up dam and removed litter and dog excrement in the dog walking section of the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia.

Emmarentia Residents Association called on the community to join them for their clean-up project at Emmarentia Dam and Johannesburg Botanical Gardens.

And the call was answered by residents on 20 October as they flocked to the dam to give it some much-needed attention.

The clean-up was also attended by learners of Greenside, Parktown Girls and Roosevelt Park high schools, Ward 88 councillor David Hensman and Felicity Lawlor and her Let’s Work team.

Jenny Grice, an environmental committee member of the association said they had listed moth-catchers, bugweeds, privets, verbenas, thistles, pickerel weed and yellow flag as their main alien vegetation targets for the project.

Grice said, “A team of almost 100 people dug up or poisoned invasive alien plants, cleared a clogged up dam and removed litter and dog excrement in the dog walking section of the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia.”

Volunteers provided dog-walkers with plastic bags and encouraged them to clean up after their pets.

Grice added that the association planned to host more projects such as this in the near future. She advised those interested in taking part to regularly check the association’s social media pages for dates and venues.

Grice thanked everyone who attended and a special thank you went to the Emmarentia and Greenside shops and businesses that made cash donations to ensure that they had the necessary supplies and equipment to make the project a reality.

The ERA is requesting monetary donations to go towards helping their clean-up initiatives. They ask those that can donate to do so to their bank account.
