John Adamson Drive becomes racing strip for reckless drivers

ROOSEVELT PARK – Residents fed-up with drivers on John Adamson Drive.

Recklessness on John Adamson Drive recently pushed residents to voice their concerns.

John Adamson Drive is one of the roads used by motorists to avoid rush-hour traffic on Beyers Naude Drive. Over the years the road and those around it have seen its fair share of accidents caused by reckless driving and this problem seems to be on the rise.

Residents of Roosevelt Park and Montgomery Park have voiced their concerns over the reckless and negligent driving on the road. Brian Dunmore, a concerned and frustrated resident, shared what he and many others have seen on the road. He said, “The road is and has been used as a raceway all day and night. It is a short road and yet cars travel at high speeds up and down the road even overtaking each other.”

According to Dunmore this type of driving recently resulted in an accident on the corner of John Adamson Drive and Fairbridge Road on 23 August. The major concern with this reckless driving is that it puts schoolchildren around the area at risk. Dunmore stated, “The school kids from the high school are walking up and down the road the entire day from about 7am until about 5.30pm. It is only a matter of time before one or more of them are knocked over.”

He recently contacted Ward 88 councillor David Hensman on the matter advising him to install traffic calming measures on the road. Dunmore said, “His comments were that the school kids should not be walking in the street and that speed bumps cannot be put in the street.” This angered Dunmore as he believes it shows a lack of empathy and urgency to deal with the community’s issues.

Dunmore also mentioned that every morning at around 8am there is a motorcycle that rides up the road at an excessive speed. This along with their main concerns have pushed the residents to contact their ward councillor and the Johannesburg Roads Agency to do something to address the matter.

Dunmore said, “I have been trying for years to have the traffic department install speed bumps and circles to slow the traffic speed down but to no avail.”
