British graffiti artist helps youngsters get creative at Kingston Frost Park

BRIXTON – Friends, fun and spray-painting.

There is no Saturday that fills the heart with quite as much joy as one spent in the community park with friends and neighbours, spray-painting away.

This is what British graffiti artist Boyd Hill did on 20 October when he helped young ones create their very own T-shirt designs at Kingston Frost Park.

Derek Smith from the Read Educational Trust, and local actress, cabaret star and chef Elzabé Zietsman also joined in on the fun.

Children from across the neighbourhood descended on the park early Saturday morning, just in time to witness Hill’s demonstration.

Zietsman, who has been a committed Brixton resident and has helped maintain the park for 11 years, said the event came about after the mini-library was put in the park by the Read Education Trust.

Derek works with graffiti artists and was able to bring Hill, who lives in Brixton London, to visit his community namesake. “Boyd also does his bit in community upliftment and he reached out to us,” he said.

The children were to cut out their own designs on a piece of paper and create a stencil of sorts to use as a guide for the spray paint.

Hill not only helped the young ones create their own designs, but he will also return to the park to graffiti a wall next to the community library in the park.

Smith, who is responsible for the mini-library, and several others like it across Joburg, said it has been a huge success.

But there is a shortage of books, and more donations are needed. To help the foundation keep up its take-a-book leave-a-book initiative, residents can send an email to info@read.co.za
