Rain could not stop the community from having fun for a good cause when Roosevelt Park Bowling Club hosted its annual open day.
A whopping R12 000 was raised for Roosevelt Park Fire Station, as community members enjoyed bowling, food, and the visit of a fire engine.
The event officially kicks off the 2018/19 bowling season.
Many children were in attendance, including a group from the Soweto Youth Development Programme.
Among the dignitaries were Ward 88 councillor David Hensman and Ian Stayt, a committee member of Bowls South Africa.
Roy Putter welcomed new members as he celebrated his 10th year as president of the club.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the sponsors, delegates in our community and the members of Roosevelt Park for the generosity they showed in raising the funds and all the other gifts for the Roosevelt Park Fire Station, which is much needed and appreciated by them,” he said.
He added that this was a community drive initiated by Roosevelt Park Bowling Club.
After everyone bowled a bit (including some firefighters) and enjoyed a great lunch, children watched in awe as a fire engine made its way into the parking lot.
With shouts of joy they ran up and climbed the vehicle, wearing plastic firefighter helmets they received.
“This event was a great success even though the weather was not conducive for playing bowls but all had a great time especially on the fire engine that they provided for the children to see and interact with,” Putter continued.
Musician and Protea bowler, Jason Evans was scheduled to perform live music on the day but unfortunately could not do so because of the weather.
