Northcliff resident dominates the Bestmed Satellite Classic cycling race

NORTHCLIFF – The difference a year, good attitude and hard work can make.

From losing the lead in the final stages of last years’ edition to winning it this year, Northcliff resident and cyclist Joanna van de Winkel won her first Bestmed Satellite Classic cycling road race.

She grabbed the top spot in the 110km race held in North West, in a blistering time of 3:11:24. She beat her nearest competitor, Carla Oberholzer who was last year’s winner, by more than a minute.

Joanna van de Winkel. The Northcliff cyclist recently won the Bestmed Satellite Classic cycling road race in North West.

Van de Winkel went into this year’s race with a positive attitude and after months of preparation and training. “When we came to Hekpoort I basically just rode my own pace and when I looked back at the top there was nobody on my wheel.

“This was the same as last year, but this time I was able to keep the gap and it was really good to take the win.”

Taking into account that she recently returned to racing after a four-year absence to raise her children, this was an incredible way to return to the sport.
