Four paws and two feet from Joburg’s much-appraised K9 Narcotics and Tactical Unit recently made the City very proud.
Metro police’s K9 Unit Inspector Peter September and Giyana, his narcotics specialist dog, managed to fetch four gold medals and three silver medals at the South African Working Trial Dog’s Association National Championship Competitions.
September and Giyana competed against 15 other dogs and their handlers from across the country.
MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun said the championship was a test for the working trial dogs and their handlers in discipline, accuracy, fitness and detection skills of the canine and human partnership.
Giyana and September were amongst the most impressive competitors, winning gold in narcotics and other substance detections, and silver in scent detection and control search.
“These accolades are well deserved because I know Inspector September had been instrumental in the training of the JMPD K9 dogs and ensuring that the City has a professional and effective K9 Unit.”
The K9 unit was relaunched on November 2016 with 60 officers and their canine counterparts. It has since been hailed for its successes throughout the City.
Metro police are also expecting 1 500 more Metro police officers, who are currently completing their training, to hit the streets of Joburg.
