Urban Ethic Market hosts Heritage Day with an African twist

BLACKHEATH – The celebration showcased this with the various food from various regions.

The Urban Ethnic Market hosted its unique version of Heritage Day celebrations on 29 September with an array of east, west and southern African dishes on display.

The shop’s owner and practising lawyer, Lovelyn Bassey, said the shop is a one-stop African food market with various traditional food from Bassie’s home country Nigeria and other countries such as Ethiopia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Congo and Zambia.

On the day, dishes from various African countries such as Gabon, Congo, Nigeria and South Africa were entered into the market’s food competition. At the end of the day, the winning Gabonese dishes stole the show.

Bassey said there was a massive and diverse expat community in the area and the celebration showcased this with the various food from various regions.

She added that her business was growing and that it was not only foreign nationals but also South Africans who came to the market to get certain foods that can be hard to come by such as plantain.

Bassey said at her shop people could try out different food that they may have never known existed. Many of the delicacies such as dried fish could go well with any food, she said.
