Sophiatown police arrest one suspect for being in possession of an illegal firearm

SOPHIATOWN – End of the road for an illegal gun-wielding individual.

Police arrest one for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

During the late evening of 2 September 2018, Sophiatown police arrested one suspect for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Sophiatown police spokesperson, Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn said, “At about 10pm members of the SAPS were patrolling the area near the Newclare train station when they saw to suspicious people walking towards the train station.

“When the suspects saw the police vehicle they ran in different directions. When we approached, one of the suspects took out their firearm and threw it on the ground.”

Upon inspection of the firearm, police discovered that its serial number was filled off.

Police also found ammunition on the suspect.

He was then arrested and charged with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The suspect will appear in the Newlands Magistrates’ Court.
