Councillor’s Corner: Getting involved at your local rec centre

JOBURG – Read this week's question in Councillor's Corner.

This week’s question was:

Different classes take place at City of Johannesburg recreation centres. How can businesses or teachers, and even average residents, make use of the centre and what is the process to follow?

Tim Truluck, Ward 117 councillor answered:

The activities and facilities at the City’s recreation centres are there for people who live in Joburg to use.

Each centre has a manager and an office where you can find a list of classes and activities available. You just need to contact the person in charge of the group you are interested in.

There may be a small annual membership fee payable to the centre and monthly or annual fee to the group organiser.

The hall and rooms are also available for hire and for occasional use as meeting rooms.

Below is a link to the various centres in Region B and the activities offered:

If you want to start your own club or activity, then you need to contact the centre manager, fill out a form for approval and find an available room and time.

I did this myself when I started the Parkhurst Petanque Club at Verity Park in 2009.

We were allocated a piece of vacant land next to the tennis courts and had to build and pay for the petanque terrain ourselves.

Do you have a question for a ward councillor?

As a local newspaper, the Randburg Sun provides a platform for residents to learn about, understand and follow local government.

As an extension of that, there is a weekly column called Councillor’s Corner which is a platform for you, our readers, to voice your concerns or questions for ward councillors to respond to.

Different, willing, ward councillors will respond to a question each week.

Email your burning question to aimeed@caxton.co.za and let’s get the ball rolling.
