Hoërskool Linden debuted their play Stop at the ATKV Tienertoneel Roodepoort Streeksfees on 6 August.
The play took home four silver medals and 14 bronze medals.
It is an inspirational story about homeless people living and coping on the streets together and is inspired by displaced people who beg at stop streets.
Drama teacher and play writer Nina Janse van Rensburg said, “A few years ago, I worked on the set of the TV show Binnelanders, and driving there I would pass a set of robots where I would see a blind beggar. Seeing his struggles every day inspired me to write this play.”
The cast of five main characters were joined by a chorus of 15 singers, and a few backstage hands to keep the show going on.
Van Rensburg added, “The kids enjoyed taking part so much, and I really think that acting in this play helped them to grow immensely.
It was quite a challenging play to act in, in a sense that each learner had to act in a situation that they have never been in before, for instance, not knowing what it is like to feel hunger or sleep on a cold street.
“I am so proud of all of our learners that took part, and I am so excited about the future of this play.”
