Joburg’s Mashaba optimistic about national and provincial Operation Buya Mthetho

JOBURG – Buya Mthetho will now be rolled out across Gauteng, not only in Joburg.

Operation Buya Mthetho, launched across the City of Johannesburg early this year, has seen Metro police out in full force enforcing bylaws.

Now, both national and provincial government have taken the initiative to the entire Gauteng region.

Joburg’s Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba said he couldn’t be more pleased to see this campaign adopted by provincial government and hopes to see it at national government level as well.

In the City, Metro police have conducted weekly operations in each of the City’s regions alongside other departments and entities in order to address illegal waste management, illegal advertising, illegal street trading, illegal water and power connections, conduct compliance operations at liquor outlets and running road safety operations.

Mashaba said Operation Buya Mthetho has proven pivotal in fighting against crime in the city.

“Over 8 000 arrests have been made by our law enforcement officials since January.

This is the kind of momentum the City needs to sustain if we are indeed to fight against crime and lawlessness,” he said.

“Restoring the rule of law in Johannesburg requires us to all join hands and say, enough! I look forward to working with the Minister of Police [Bheki Cele] and our provincial police in order to keep our residents safe.”
