UJ to present new international art exhibition from 15 August

AUCKLAND PARK – Transcend, transpose and transform at UJ's Art Gallery.

The University of Johannesburg’s Art Gallery invites members of the public to come and experience their new international exhibition called TRANS.

The art exhibition will be open from 15 August at UJ’s Art Gallery. The aim of the exhibition is for those that attend to question their boundaries and embrace the possibility of existing in different ways say the organisers.

Brazilian curator Daniella Géo will be the curator of the exhibition. Géo holds a PhD in Film and Audiovisual Studies from the Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris).

He has curated numerous exhibitions including Biennale de Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Biennale internationale de la Photographie et des Arts visuels de Liège in Belgium.

According to Géo, TRANS is a visionary collection by top artists from 11 countries whose works explore transit and movement, with the aim to transcend, transpose, transgress and transform.

She said, “This combination of five letters, t-r-a-n-s, is in itself imbued of motion – a motion towards diversity.

Once having been solely a prefix, ‘trans’ has become a word in its own right. While it is an adjective pertaining to chemistry’s jargon, trans is most commonly associated to its gender-related meaning.”

American artist Pat Ward Williams will have his work, Rad Run, feature in the University of Johannesburg’s TRANS exhibition. The exhibition will feature the work of artists from 11 countries.

The exhibition will feature screenings, artworks, interactive installations and performances by 19 artists from Iran, Brazil, Cameroon, India, Belgium, South Africa and a few other countries.

Launching in Women’s Month, the exhibition further represents a commitment by the UJ Art Gallery to embody and embrace diversity, as exhibited in the works of TRANS and also an affirmation of the role of women in generating and sustaining cultural ecosystems.

The TRANS exhibition will run from 15 August to 19 September, Mondays to Fridays, 9am – 4pm at UJ Auckland Park Kingsway Campus ( https://goo.gl/maps/6LjTHVbuNb82 ).
