BREAKING: Westdene commune fire injures one, leaves many homeless

WESTDENE – The commune has been reported to authorities for many years, the Westdene-Sophiatown RA says.

A fire that broke out at the notorious 10A 2nd Avenue property in Westdene has injured a *boy and left many, including women and children, homeless.

The property, which is considered by many to be an unsafe slum, reportedly caught fire twice today, first this morning then again at noon.

The Westdene-Sophiatown Residents Association chairperson, Dauw Steyn, said the property has been reported to officials for over 10 years, to no avail.

With concern rising over the welfare of the residents of the house, Steyn is asking the community to help with food, blankets and clothing donations.

It is still not certain where the residents will stay.

Steyn is helping to collect donations at the Westdene recreation centre until 6pm and then at 47 Toby Street in Sophiatown or 24 Stafford Street after that.

Those that are able to contribute tomorrow, can deliver to Milos Hardware at 47 3rd Ave in Westdene.

***Editor’s Note : Northcliff Melville Times initially reported that a firefighter was injured during the fire, however, it has come to light that the person injured during the incident is a young boy not a firefighter. We apologize for the incorrect information.
