An abandoned newly born baby boy was found in a dustbin, on the eve of a brutal cold front expected to hit the city.
A passerby found a newborn in a dustbin on his way to work in Linden on 2 July. The child was found just before 6am crying while wrapped in a black refuse bag. The Linden community heard of the news and immediately alerted members of community Whatsapp group’s about the baby.
Once the news started circulating, the community jumped at the opportunity to help the baby boy and has already donated plastic-loads of baby clothing and products. Alyson Samson from Kindness Like Confetti shared that she contacted Marle Coetsee of Wolf Wolf, who has already opened up her store to be a drop-off point for donations for the NGO, The Grace Factory. Coetsee said the store has been a hive of activity with people coming in to drop off clothes, blankets, bottles and even a bed.
The baby was collected by social service shortly after and was taken to the Milpark Hospital for check-ups. Samson confirmed that the baby was perfectly well and was being transferred to Park Lane Hospital.
She said, “We are very grateful that the baby is safe and warm.” She also gave praise to the community for all the donations made so far. The items collected will be donated to the facility where the baby will ultimately find a home.
Samson and Coetsee urge the community to keep the support flowing, by donating items for the child.
Anyone who has details on the person responsible for this child is urged to contact the police as soon as possible as a case of child abandonment has been open.
