BRIXTON – The past three months have been fruitful for the police as they arrested 293 suspects for a range of crimes.
Brixton police have been hard at work to improve the safety and security of every member of the community. In a statement issued by the police station, it read, “There is no policing without the community; the fight against crime is an “us” thing. A vigilant and active member of the community police programmes is a much safer community member.” These words are directly linked to the successes the police station has made over the past few months.
In the last three months, the police station was able to arrest 293 suspects for 13 different crimes. These crimes included assault with intent to cause grievous body harm, driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of dagga, theft, shoplifting and others.
More impressive than the actual arrests is the number of convictions stemming from the arrests. Here are some of the convictions and sentences following arrests and investigations by Brixton police:
House robbery, 15 years imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm
Theft, 12 years suspended for five years
Robbery with a weapon, 10 years imprisonment
Armed robbery, 10 years imprisonment
Robbery with a firearm, 10 years imprisonment
Business robbery, five years suspended for five years
Fraud, two years imprisonment
Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, R1 000 or three months imprisonment
Possession of dagga, one-year imprisonment
Dealing in drugs, R1 000 or six months imprisonment
Theft, 18 months imprisonment
Shoplifting, R400 or 80 days imprisonment.
