Local bar to assist local school for Mandela Day

MELVILLE – In honour of Mandela Day, here is what a local cocktail bar has planned.

A local cocktail bar has launched their first community based project to help others in the spirit of Mandela Day.

Six Cocktail Bar, is on a mission to replicate the selfless and helpful characteristics of the late former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. They have partnered up with Sparrow Schools to host a Mandela Day charity drive.

Co-manager of the bar Gugulethu Xakaza said, “We’ve never done anything like this before, we’ve never been involved in any community projects so our intention this year is to do more.”

She went on to say that there will be basket stations around the bar, also known as Sixes, where people can come and donate various items.

Xakaza stated that Sparrow Schools have identified what they would like but are open to all kinds of donations. “In terms of the school, toys, tinned foods, computers, financial and stationary donations would be highly appreciated.”

The school would love for people to come take the children out from school for educational tours and trips, she added. Apart from the charity drive, Sixes will be offering their time, energy and resources to the school on Mandela Day, which is on 18 July. Xakaza said, “As Sixes, we will be going to the school and helping with painting, gardening, cleaning and maintenance of the premises on the day.”

Sixes have also identified displaced people living around Melville in need of assistance. They will be collecting blankets to donate to the displaced individuals around the area during this drive as well.

The charity drive began on 1 June and will go on until 18 July, Mandela Day. Xakaza has contacted a few local celebrities to partake in the initiative and pledge their support for the cause.

Anyone interested in donating to this charity drive can contact Six Cocktail Bar at 011 482 8306.

Six Cocktail Bar is hosting their first community based project and they need as many people to get involved as possible.
