Local wins in the PPC Imaginarium competition

LINDEN – Giovanni Zambri, an architectural lighting designer won a prestigious award in the industrial design category at the PPC Imaginarium competition.

A local designer has won a prestigious award in the PPC Imaginarium competition.

Giovanni Zambri, a 27-year-old architectural lighting designer grew up in Linden and has always had a passion for design. He said what inspired him to take this route is the ability to be creative. “I am not limited to a desk job and a screen. I can explore and use my creativity with my hands,” said Zambri.

He obtained an honours degree in interior design at Greenside Design Centre. He then worked as a freelancer and gained experience in lighting design to build his profile.

He entered the PPC Imaginarium competition, an ambitious modern art and design competition aimed at providing emerging artists and designers with the opportunity to showcase their talents through the medium of concrete in South Africa – and he won the Industrial Design category. PPC is a South African cement producing company.

“There are many reasons that inspired me to enter the competition,” said Zambri.

“The main reason, I think was that you can mould concrete like plastic to produce something functional, that is why I like the industrial design category as it is a challenging and interesting category.

“The concept I submitted was based on the idea of psychological well-being and promoting physical health through a bicycle. It was a part of the auspicious gala exhibition at the UJ Gallery.”

Zambri is currently speaking to different artists to collaborate with them. He plans on working with them to make bikes similar to the one that won the award.

Zambri will be mentored by some of the most influential South African creatives in the country in the next few months and his concept will go on a roadshow where it will be displayed in galleries and at exhibitions such as the AVA Gallery Exhibition, Open Design Festival, UJ Gallery Exhibition, Turbine Hall Art Fair Exhibition, 100% Design South Africa Exhibition and the KZNSA Gallery Exhibition.
