Police visit Coronation training centre to celebrate Child Protection Week

NEWLANDS – Children from Coronation Training Centre received a visit from the police to teach them about child protection.

Coronation Training Centre ended Child Protection Week with a motivational message for the children, on their school grounds on 4 June.

Warrant Officer Jerbes de Bruyn gives the children tips on how to report abuse to the police.

Coronation Training Centre is a school for youngsters with disabilities. The school had a child protection week programme for the children at the school. Members of the Metro police, the police and a member from social development were all present on the day.

Children, teachers, and parents gather to hear what the day has in store for them.

The purpose of the programme, which started at 9am, was to create a platform for people that have complaints about how children are treated in and around the area. The school wanted to make sure that the parents and guardians of children at the school are aware that the school is taking a stand against the abuse of children.

Posters of encouragement are on walls around the school.

Principal Phebe Botman-Kerspuy said, “The police are there to protect us and today they are here to promise us that they will not leave any stone unturned until justice has been served to any person who has brought any harm to you.”

Officer Thandeka Khanyile from the Metro police was there to make sure that the youngsters knew that they can trust the police.

“Do you believe the police are your friends? We are here to tell you that we are your friends and we love you. We will protect you.”

Officer Ouma Morudi sings and dances with the children as she educates them that no one is allowed to touch their bodies.

Officer Ouma Morudi taught the children a song to help them remember a few rules they should set. Together with the children officer Morudi sang, ‘No one is allowed to touch my body’.

Captain Kloppers from Sophiatown Police Station said, “Remember that a stranger is anybody that you don’t know. Say no to strangers when they offer you anything in the streets.”

The event ended with the children singing We Are The World by Michael Jackson.

Posters show that all children have abilities.
