A man from Greymont was reported missing at Sophiatown Police Station until investigations revealed that the case was more than what met the eye.
On 2 June, Kit Johnson was reported missing by an unidentified woman who is apparently close to him. The woman said that she was trying to get hold of him with no success.
She contacted a family member who upon visiting his house, found that the doors were locked and his dogs were locked at the back of the yard with no food or water, showing signs that they have not been taken care of for a while.
A neighbour informed the family member that a man had come to Johnson’s house and claimed that he was there to look after the dogs.
The man apparently had the keys to Johnson’s house and claimed that the homeowner was in Cape Town.
However, Johnson’s phone was traced to an address in Robin Hills and the man’s number was also traced to the same address.
The man immediately became a suspect and when police visited the address, nobody was found. On 4 June, it became apparent that a large sum of moneywas transferred via eWallet to the suspect’s phone number. Another large amount was transferred on 9 June.

On the morning of 10 June, the suspect went to Sophiatown Police Station and was apparently driving Johnson’s vehicle. He informed police that he had ‘seen’ Johnson at Hyde Park. Family believe that this was done in order to mislead them.
The police called Johnson’s friend to come and identify the vehicle. Police found that the papers of the vehicle were in the suspect’s name and he couldn’t explain why that was.
When officers asked why he was in possession of Johnson’s car, he told them that he was given the car to sell it. When asked where the owner was, the suspect could not give an answer.
“The suspect is in custody while investigations are underway. A case of kidnapping has been opened,” said Warrant Officer Jerbes de Bruyn.
