Die Klein Genie crèche host police visit for their children

LINDEN – Children need to know the police are their friends and they can rely on them.

The children of Die Klein Genie crèche had an exciting day when they were visited by members of the police force.

Some Linden Police Station officers visited on 22 May to familiarise the children with the work the police do and to introduce themselves in a fun way.

Spokesperson Constable Takalani Matumba explained the purpose of the trip. She said, “We do these school visits to teach children not to be scared of the police and give them tips on how to stay safe.”

Matumba regarded the visit as a success as the children were interactive and remembered their crucial lessons.

Warrant Officer DJ Pieterse shared what children should remember when they are out at malls with their parents.

He said, “They need to know what to do if they are separated from their parents. We tell them if this happens they need to go speak to the mall’s security and not wander off looking for them.”

He also taught them to bring attention to themselves by screaming and crying if a stranger tries to take them.

Apart from the lessons given by the police the little ones also got to play with the police sirens and try on some police hats and vests. Pieterse said he really enjoyed the visit.

Matumba said the station often does such visits and they are more than happy to keep doing so. She added that this ensures they go out and meet people and exchange life-saving information with them.

She welcomed schools to invite them to share safety and security tips. If interested, you can call the Linden Police Station for more information on 011 888 9299.
