VOX POP: Keep warm and healthy this winter

BERARIO – How can you keep warm and healthy this winter? Here are some easy tips.

With winter slowly but surely creeping in, there are a few ways to keep warm and stay healthy at the same time.

One thing that we have in common is winter colds and flu. Sneezing and coughing can make you feel down but by doing basic, everyday things you can stay healthy.

Socialising

Being around people can make you feel warmer than you would if you were on your own. Spend time with friends and family and snuggle up with some hot beverages. The warmth of the company will make you forget that its cold outside.

Food

Foods that are high in healthy fats help the body regulate its temperature, helping you to keep warm. Foods such as nuts, cheese and eggs can come in handy.

Exercise

Warm up your body naturally to avoid high electricity bills and an expanding waistline. The rise in your body temperature will also soothe and calm you after a good workout.

Hot beverages

Sip on something warm and steamy. There is a wide variety you can choose from. Grab a cup of chamomile, ginger, lemon or peppermint tea. This keeps you warm and some of the ingredients help prevent colds and flu.

Steamy baths

Hop in the bathtub and soak up the heat before going to sleep. Get a hot-water bottle and keep yourself warm during cold nights.

The Northcliff Melville Times visited the Berario Community Centre and asked residents how they keep warm and healthy during winter.

This is what they had to say …

LUCAS MAKHALLEMELE: I just stay indoors. I will wear my big jackets and boots and work all day to stay distracted. It’s all in the mind, shift your mindset and you won’t feel the cold!

GODFREY KHASAKE: I wake up early in the morning, so a warm cup of tea gets me ready to go.

THOMAS MAMAILA: My gas heater is my best friend. I refill it once a month and I’m good to go. Some coffee when I’m outdoors is also an escape from the harsh weather.

FAY BLAIN: I plan on having a lot of soup and a lot of stew. That’s the best way to keep warm.

PRECIOUS DLUNGWANA: I suggest eating different types of soups. I also keep warm by covering myself up with blankets and going to bed early, this also saves electricity.

PAULINE SILCOCK: I keep myself warm by running twice a week and I’m involved in MetaFit in the area.

SHANNON MOORE: We meet at the recreation centre and do a 10km run to keep warm and healthy.

BELLA THUSI: Dressing warm, drinking a lot of water and eating healthy foods like vegetables will help us get through this cold, cold winter.

PAULINE VAN RAYNE: I keep warm by eating a lot of soup, dressing well and staying indoors.
