Earlier this month, the Auckland Park Academy of Excellence (Apex) partnered with the South African National Zakah Fund (Sanzaf) as part of their annual Adopt a Granny initiative.
This initiative is part of Sanzaf’s Operation Winter Warmth Campaign.
The school’s Fazela Amod said their Grade 7 and 8 girls spoilt the adopted grannies of the Reuven Old Age Home in Turffontein.
“The senior ladies were transported to Apax to enjoy a special programme dedicated to them in our morning assembly,” she said.
The programme started with a prayer followed by a selection of Arabic songs, called Nasheeds. The Nasheeds, Amod said, were specially chosen to communicate an essential Islamic value of respect and care for the elderly.
“Before embarking on a shopping spree to the Fashion World branch at the Glen Shopping Mall our esteemed guests were treated to a hearty breakfast to warm their hearts and energise them for the shopping expedition.”
Amod said the girls were more than willing to help the grannies to spend their allocated R1 000.
“The Adopt a Granny initiative hopes to achieve several things, including creating awareness of the needs and plight of the elderly, and building specialisation skills among learners.”
The initiative also gives the grannies an opportunity to exercise choice by allowing them to choose what they need and want, thereby giving our elderly back their dignity, Amod concluded.
