Newlands shop owner held at gunpoint

NEWLANDS – Police apprehend a suspect who robbed a shop in Newlands.

A shop owner was held at gunpoint when two suspects entered his shop in Newlands.

This is according to Sophiatown police spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn, who said the shop owner was in his shop on 18 April at 6.14 pm.

Sophiatown police spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bryun is confident the other suspect will be apprehended.

The shop’s security gate was closed and the security official was guarding the gate while the owner was inside the storeroom. He heard the security guard talking to two familiar customers, one male and one female. These particular customers are regulars at the store.

“They seem to know each other and were discussing something when the male came to the counter and asked for cigarettes. As he turned around another male was standing at the security gate of the counter, pointing a firearm at him.

The black male ordered him to open the gate. While unlocking, the white male came around, then grabbed the cash register and it fell,” said De Bruyn.

He added the security guard was fighting with the female, however, both suspects managed to get away.

The guard screamed for help and a member of the community came to his aid and apprehended the male suspect. The suspects escaped with R3 000.

“No shots were fired but the complainant and the suspect sustained minor injuries. The white male returned to the crime scene later, where he was identified and arrested. The firearm was later recovered,” said De Bruyn.
