Fairland crime spike warning

FAIRLAND – 'People need to be a little more aware of their surroundings'

A sudden crime spike in the usually-quiet Fairland, has station commander, Colonel Clive de Freitas worried.

Four home invasions occurred in just over a week, and three of the victims were elderly. “This is unheard of in Fairland,” he said.

During all the incidents, three to five suspects held up the residents and took household items and, in one incident, they also took the victims’ car.

An elderly man was injured on his head during one of the invasions when he tried to protect his wife, the station commander said.

In each instance, criminals simply walked in through open gates and open front doors – and this is what concerns De Freitas.

“Residents should please be a little more aware of their surroundings, and don’t leave gates open,” he said.

De Freitas said police are not aware of any cars involved, but the suspects are dropped off and then walk.

“If people look suspicious, rather wait until they have passed or drive around the block and contact police or your security company.”

The station has had to respond to business and street robberies as well.

De Freitas urged residents to remember the basics, like not leaving valuables in your car and remembering to lock your house’s gates when they are not being used.

Police are investigating the incidents and residents are urged to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of these suspects.
