Melville residents launches debut book

MELVILLE – A 230-page inspirational book comes with 50 cards, illustrated by the first-time author.

After close to two decades in the making, first-time self-published author and Melville creative, Marian Hammon has released As The Crow Flies, a book to help readers start their days afresh and inspired.

The 230 pager comes with 50 cards illustrated by Hammon. Each card has a matching chapter in the book.

The book was 16 years in the making and she decided to finally finish it around two years ago after going to a writing class.

Marian Hammon says As The Crow Flies is an ideal way to start your day.

“I use the energies of plants and animals and link them to our lives to inspire and allow for our understanding,” she said.

The book is influenced by colour therapy as well as animals and plants, and takes readers back to nature, teaches about plants and animals and draws on the meanings of each.

Hammon officially launched the book on 9 March at a friend’s house in Melville. Many of the 50 watercolour illustrations were completed years ago.

Hammon said she had an esoteric centre in Melville some time back, selling various products like candles and cards. She closed the shop when she had her son, but still makes candles and does illustrations from her home. It is there where you can purchase As The Crow Flies for R550.

Whether before meditation or before writing your morning notes, As The Crow Flies, Hammon said, is an ideal way to start the day. As for the title of the book, Hammon said a crow flies the fastest route.

“Often we want the fastest route to inspiration and happiness.”

The cards were carefully collated by Hammon herself and are essentially another lovingly-made product which she hopes inspires those who read the book.

Hammon is working on a second book with another 50 illustrated cards.
