Brixton Community Forum beautify Kingston Frost Park

BRIXTON – Passionate residents work together to beautify and develop a park in their community.

The Brixton Community Forum members are dedicated to creating a safe and enjoyable experience for residents at the Kingston Frost Park.

Forum member Elzabe Zietsman has been a Brixton resident for the last 11 years and is actively involved in improving the condition of the park.

Elzabe Zietsman and Sophia Welz welcome the public to participate in the Park’s exciting activities.

She said before she started working in the park, it was filled with displaced people, had a public toilet filled with litter and was a gathering place for criminal activity.

Some residents took it upon themselves to start working in the park and hired Zietman’s gardener, Daniel Masakona, to work in the park twice a week.

He eventually started working full time due to the park being so big. So far, community members pay for him from their own pockets, however, the City of Joburg mows the lawn.

“It took us five years to get the weeds under control, now it’s a matter of maintaining it. The park looks dramatically different from the initial stages in the 70s when there was not a single tree,” said Zietsman.

The park has various exciting features such as a gym, soccer courts, benches and a children’s play area, which was also upgraded. She added that it would be fantastic if students also got involved in cleaning up the park because they frequent it the most.

Kingston Frost Park features a gym accessible to the public.

“What we are most grateful for is the City providing us with 24-hour security, which has stopped the muggings in the park. For that, we are extremely grateful.

Two years ago muggings would happen on a daily basis, which I could hear from my home,” said Zietman.

Brixton Community Forum chairperson Sophia Welz said the forum hosts an organised Park Day every third Saturday of the month between 9am and 12pm, when residents participate in cleaning the park.

There’s a different theme each time it’s hosted, this weekend it will be reading to the children.
