Two Brixton taverns closed after police intervention

BRIXTON – Two 'problematic' taverns were closed by police.

Brixton police, the Liquor Board, Community Policing Form, community patrollers and security companies helped close two ‘problematic’ taverns in High Street on 9 March.

Jeanette Backhoff, spokesperson for the station, said special operations were conducted regularly at the two well-known taverns because of complaints from the community.

“These two taverns have also been identified as generators of crime in the community,” she said.

Both taverns were searched and fined for selling illegal liquor. Backhoff said around 350 people were also searched.

All liquor that was sold on the street outside one of the taverns was confiscated.

Jeanette Backhoff, spokesperson for Brixton Police Station, says all liquor that was sold on the street outside of one of the taverns was confiscated.

Backhoff said statistics show that taverns and nightclubs in Brixton are contributing to crime in the area.

Drugs are being sold at these taverns and criminals use these places as hideouts, she alleged.

“This is a warning to all taverns in the Brixton policing area that they need to comply with the rules and regulations set by the liquor board. More raids and joint operations will follow.”
