JOBURG – We take a look at news you might have missed from the City of Johannesburg this week.

From 8 000 properties being revalued to special rights for taxis on the road, let’s take a look at what happened at the City of Joburg this week.

Firstly, Joburg’s Metro police impounded 20 taxis at the corner of William Nicol Drive and Leslie Avenue on 5 March as Operation Buya Mthetho, meaning bring back the law, continues across the City of Johannesburg.

Spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, told the Randburg Sun the taxis were impounded because they drove on the wrong side of the road and were operating without valid driver’s licences.

Staying with the Metro police, public safety veteran, David Tembe has officially been inaugurated as Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s new chief.

Tembe was sworn in and took an oath to protect and serve. During his first address, he said, “As JMPD, our success will not be measured by the number of arrests that we make or the number of citations that we issue to offenders.

Only the reduction of crime, fear and disorder will reveal how successful we are.”

After much confusion and frustration by homeowners, after the City released its latest municipal valuation, a staggering 8 000 Joburg properties that appear to be overvalued will be revalued and placed on the supplementary valuation roll.

The mayor said these 8 000 valuations, which have been identified as problematic, have experienced considerable increases, many over 100 per cent.

Finally, this weekend, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will open over 22 000 voting stations.

Voters can visit their voting stations on 10 and 11 March to update their details on the national voters roll in preparation for the national elections next year.

Here, new voters over the age of 16 can register. Registered voters can update their addresses so they can vote in their correct district.

Voters visiting their voting stations should remember to take their bar-coded green ID book, smart card ID or valid temporary ID certificate.

The IEC said that no proof of residence is required.
