VIDEO: Graffiti, friend or foe?

JOBURG – Hate it or love it graffiti is on the wall and it's not going away. Find out what people's thoughts on this type of art form are.

It’s found on walls around cities, it’s bold, in your face and most times it’s provocative.

The origin of the graffiti is mid 19th century Italian, from the singular form graffio ‘a scratch’. It is defined as writing or drawings which have been scratched, scribbled or painted illegally on a wall or other surface, usually in public view.

Graffiti ranges from simple words to elaborate wall paintings, and it has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to ancient Egypt and Greece, and the Roman Empire. It has been around in many different forms from cave paintings to carvings in Pompeii.

It is an art form that has withstood the test of time which is continually evolving.

The Northcliff Melville Times spoke to students at the University of the Witwatersrand to find out what their thoughts on this art form are.
