Sof’town woman overpowered by three men in her home

SOPHIATOWN – A Sophiatown woman was doing her laundry when she was surprised by three men on her property.

Sophiatown police are investigating a house robbery after a woman was allegedly overpowered by an armed man and his accomplices on her property.

The robbery took place in Meyer Street, Sophiatown between 10.30am and 11.30am on 26 February.

Spokesperson for the Sophiatown Police Station, TJ de Bruyn, said a female homeowner was doing laundry in her yard when she was confronted by the three house robbers, one of whom was allegedly armed.

He explained that the woman heard the property’s perimeter gate open and upon inspection, she was confronted by a man.

She asked how he had gained access as the gate was closed. It is unclear whether the gate was simply closed or whether it was locked at the time.

Two other men then joined the intruder and the three allegedly forced the woman into the house at gunpoint. It is believed the woman was assaulted in the process.

The suspects took various items. Police have so far confirmed that jewellery of an unknown value were some of the items taken from the home before they fled the scene in a white vehicle.

Police are investigating a case of house robbery and had not made any arrests by the time of publication.
