Be vigilant at public parks

EMMARENTIA – The police encourage residents to report common robbery cases when they take place.

According to Parkview police, a number of robberies have taken place at Johannesburg Botanical Gardens recently.

Spokesperson for Parkview Police Station, Tintswalo Sibeko said, “Due to the reports that police received, it led to implementing a plan to address the increase of crime-related incidents at the park.

“Police members patrol the area at different times of the day in order to increase the chances of arresting the suspects and reducing crime.”

Sibeko said suspects are targeting joggers and dog walkers who tend to carry their valuables with them such as electronic devices and their wallets.

“I believe carrying these items increases the chances of being mugged or approached by criminals.”

She advised residents to rather visit the park in groups, to leave valuables at home and avoid wearing headphones as they distract a person from their surroundings.

When approached by a criminal, she advised victims to hand over whatever the suspects ask for to avoid being harmed.

“The cases which are reported normally take place between 5.45am and 8am and late at the afternoon after 6pm. The cases which we are aware of are still under investigation.

Sibeko urged those who have been robbed at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens to immediately report the cases to the police and to provide a description of the suspect if they have one.
