Vox Pop: Given what’s happening politically, do you think politicians are above the law?

MELVILLE – Politicians are under the spotlight for their poor judgement in areas affecting society.

The political climate has made an interesting turn, with politicians being held accountable for their decisions.

Politicians’ decisions have gone against the code of conduct they committed to adhere to and in some instances have resulted in the misuse of public funds.

Northcliff Melville Times asked residents if thought politicians were above the law.

Here is what they had to say…

MICHAEL MACLEOD: Corruption takes place in all countries, not only in South Africa. The difference is other counties politicians are arrested, stripped of their title and fined. That’s what exactly should happen.

JASMINE PILLAY: Some of these politicians make selfish decisions which affect us all. They need to be more patriotic and take responsibility for their actions.

DAUW STEYN: Politicians should face harsher sentences for their abuse of power and should be entirely banned from participating in politics. Citizens need to realise the amount of power they have to remove corrupt politicians.

HELEN O’HANCAHAN: It’s about time, corruption must fall. Politicians must be held accountable and suffer the consequences.

MOTHUSIOTSILE GWAYI: I believe most of these politicians are driven by greed and money. There’s no point to all these enquiries, they’ll probably get off scott free.

JUAN PEZER: It’s good they are being held accountable. Our tax money should be used the right way to help people in society.

VICTOR MARUMA: I feel politicians don’t realise how their decisions affect the whole country. They should face the full consequences and go to jail.
