Take care of your personal possessions at restaurants

EMMARENTIA – Theft of cellphones in restaurants is increasing in the Parkview Police Station precinct.

The Parkview police received a number complaints of theft of cellphones at restaurants.

Parkview Police Station spokesperson captain Tintswalo Sibeko said there has been an increase in the number of cases reported. Emmarentia Greenhill Road, Parkhurst 4th Avenue and Parktown North 7th and 3rd avenues are particularly affected.

“The suspects use different cars to steal from customers at restaurants. One of the suspects walks around checking if customers put their cellphones on top of the table,” said Sibeko.

Victims should report the theft, she said, adding that they also need to inform their service provider and blacklist the phone. The person will be provided with an ITC and IMEI number, which is required at the police station for the purpose of the investigation.

“Customers must not leave their valuable items unattended. They must avoid leaving their cellphones on top of tables while at restaurants, as criminals see this as an opportunity to steal,” advised Sibeko.

She urged residents who have further information, to contact the police to assist them in their investigations.
