Men arrested for hijacking cigarette truck

NEWCLARE – The Sophiatown Police Station and Metro Police made two arrests and recovered R20 000 worth of cigarettes after a hijacking incident.

The Sophiatown Police Station arrested two men aged 26 and 32 for hijacking a cigarette truck in Steytler Street, Newclare.

The arrests were made on 23 January after police officers were given a tip-off at 9.20am.

Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn, spokesperson for the Sophiatown Police Station, explained that police were informed of the incident and immediately started searching for the men and the vehicle.

In a joint effort to bring the men to justice, the Metro Police were involved and arrested the hijacker who drove the vehicle while the Sophiatown police arrested the second hijacker.

De Bruyn said the second hijacker managed to escape police custody when he was initially arrested. A chase ensued and the hijacker ignored the police’s warning shot. He was subsequently shot in his left leg and was rearrested.

“Paramedics treated the suspect on the scene and he [was] taken to Helen Joseph Hospital,” De Bruyn said.

The vehicle was recovered, as well as most of the stolen cigarettes which were valued at R20 000.

Police are now investigating a case of hijacking.
