The Sophiatown Police Station and various security companies discovered 42 packets of dagga in Newclare Park on 9 January.
The retrieval of the dagga came as a result of a joint operation conducted by Sophiatown police officers, Beagle Watch, Apcan and Chubb.
Spokesperson for the Sophiatown Police Station, TJ de Bruyn, said the operation also included some of the station’s newly graduated police officers. He added that while various bags of dagga were found, no arrests were made.
In a Facebook post, Beagle Watch stated that one of their Task Force officers noticed a suspicious person sitting on a log in the park where the dagga was found. They explained that the man ran off when he noticed an increased police and security presence.
Beagle Watch said more such operations will be held in future to prevent crime while also building relationships with the South African Police Service.
