All you need to know about Joburg’s New Year’s carnival

JOBURG – The inner city will again be brightened up with the annual New Year's carnival.

As Joburgers get ready to welcome the new year, the City of Johannesburg will go ahead with yet another Rio-style carnival.

The carnival will start in Hillbrow and move through the inner city, toward Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown.  Thereafter, local acts will light up the stage until after midnight, when 2018 comes round.

The Joburg Carnival has become a tradition that celebrates the City’s reputation as a melting-pot of different cultural traditions. The carnival will start at noon from Hillbrow, Kotze Street, allowing residents and visitors to take part and enjoy.

The procession moves from Hillbrow, through the streets of inner city, along Rahima Moosa Street (previously Jeppe Street) into Newtown at the Mary Fitzgerald Square precinct.

The carnival will end at 5pm whereafter the New Year’s Eve event starts at 6pm.

Live performances will feature The Soil, Nadia Nakai, Bucie, Samthing Soweto, Euphonik, KO, Reason, Ms Cosmo and many more.

Although entrance is free, cooler boxes, alcohol, hubbly-bubbly pipes, fireworks and weapons will not be allowed into the venue.

The carnival, led by Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba, will also see various roads closed off. Various roads in the inner city will be closed from 6am Sunday till 6am Monday.

Notably, there will be diversions on the M1 North and South on the double-decker section.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency said sections of the M1 North and M1 South will be affected from 9pm until 11pm.

Full road closures on M1 North and M1 South will be from 11pm until 1am on New Year’s Day and traffic will be diverted accordingly.

Both Highways will be fully operational by 1am on the first of January.
