Motor vehicle theft on the rise in Melville

MELVILLE – The Brixton Police Station sheds light on Melville's car theft hotspots.

Brixton Police Station has noticed an alarming increase in motor vehicle theft in Melville and urged residents to be vigilant.

The station’s Social Crime Prevention Unit, as well as the Women’s Network, held a crime awareness campaign in Melville on 7 December after noticing an increase in motor vehicle theft.

“It has become apparent that in specific areas of Melville, theft of motor vehicles are increasing [at] an alarming rate,” said the spokesperson for Brixton Police Station, Jeanette Backhoff.

She said the problem needs a lot of attention and urged community members as well as surrounding businesses to be vigilant.

“Problem streets include 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th Street with the VW Golf being the most popular vehicle being targeted.

“With the assistance of the community and members of the public we can all make a positive difference in this specific crime.”
