Vox Pop: Your thoughts on new parental leave bill

NORTHCLIFF – Father, same-sex couples, as well as surrogate and adoptive parents will soon be entitled to parental leave after their child is born. We find out what fellow residents think about it.

A landmark bill was recently passed by parliament which will effectively entitle all parents to take parental leave.

In the past, only mothers have legally been allowed to take maternity leave.

The Citizen reported that under the Labour Laws Amendment Bill, which still has to pass scrutiny by the National Council of Province and be signed into law by President Jacob Zuma, fathers will now be entitled to 10 days’ parental leave.

This also applies to same-sex couples, as well as surrogate and adoptive parents, which marks a seismic change in how the law regards what constitutes a family, the publication said.

QUAN LIANG: I think it is fantastic. It’s in the child’s best interest after all. It does not matter whether you are the mother, father or adoptive parent.

LOREEN APPOLLO: It is a good idea. It is good to share responsibility when the baby is there. Taking care of a baby is a shared responsibility.

MICHELLE SIBIYA: I think it is very good news. When I do have children one day it will be exciting for their father to also help out.

JULIA GOSLIN: I think the new bill is a really good idea. A man should be able to help his wife – at least for those first few days.

ZANDER SHAWE: This shows that we are a progressive country. A father is now also able to spend time with his newborn and help out the new mom.
