Sophiatown Police Station Commander, Brigadier Susan Crafford writes:
Police officers along with other role players [in the community] will do everything possible to remove criminals from the Sophiatown precinct and ensure a crime-free Christmas and festive period.
We also request the public not to commit crime(s) or misuse drugs and liquor and to always be aware of their surroundings.

Throughout the year, contact crimes [in the precinct] reduced by 16 per cent. [Crimes which saw a decrease} were murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and common assault.
Robbery with aggravating circumstances showed a reduction of 21 per cent.
Property crimes also showed a reduction of 18 per cent which includes house and business break-ins. Partnerships with [Metro police], security companies and [involvement in] blue light operations and stop-and-search operations assisted in the fight against crime.
There was a 38 per cent decrease in carjackings.
Various community meetings were held in Sector 1, 2 and 3, however, unfortunately we were not so successful with regard to mobilising [community members] in all three sectors.
[Community members patrolling the street need assistance. They] urgently need more attention. There is still a lack of trustworthy informers to help information flow to the police. We have to mobilise and revive the youth desk at the Sophiatown Police Station in our fight against crimes and drug and substance abuse.The youth is still being misused to sell and distribute drugs.
Police were, however, successful in arresting most of the wanted suspects who are linked with murder and attempted murder cases.
We are looking forward to recruiting volunteers to support victims of crime.
