20 years imprisonment for student robber

BRIXTON – Months after holding students up with a gun, a man gets put away for 20 years.

A man who robbed two students near the University of Johannesburg has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment.

The man, as well as his accomplice who got away after the incident on 7 April, robbed the two students near the University of Johannesburg’s Bunting Campus.

According to the Brixton Police Station spokesperson, Jeanette Backhoff, the two men held the students up with a knife and a firearm. Backhoff said members of the community who witnessed the incident pointed out one of the suspects to a security guard who chased after him and apprehended him.

The two students positively identified him and he was found in possession of a firearm as well as the students’ property.

“The suspect was brought to Brixton Police Station and [a] case of armed robbery was opened,” Backhoff said.

The case docket was then handed over to Detective Constable M. Pule who investigated the matter.

During his final court appearance in the Newlands Magistrates’ Court, he was found guilty and was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment and was ruled unfit to possess a firearm.
