Swimming in sewage

NEWLANDS – Joburg Water promises to come up with a permanent solution for sewage problem.

A resident has come forward about a sewage problem she has been experiencing for three years and Johannesburg Water said they are committed to finding a long-term fix.

Chantel Britz, a Newlands Road resident, said over the last three years she has experienced sewage problems just about every month.

“Every time the sewage comes up, they come to unblock it but then it comes up again two weeks later,” Britz said.

She reached boiling point when the sewage started spilling over into her property’s pool.

“We don’t even fill our pool anymore because it’s actually better that the sewage runs into the pool and not onto the rest of our property or our house,” she explained.

She said her property is not the only one affected. Depending on how bad the blockage is, it affects more than a few residents on her block. Britz has now called for a permanent solution to the problem.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Issac Dhluhlu said he has taken the matter up with the Langlaagte Depot and is waiting for feedback on what the problem is and a possible solution.

“We will definitely make sure to look into a permanent solution. It’s the customer who suffers at the end of the day and we can’t have that,” Dhludlu said.
